Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering Center (ESSEC) Participates in Istanbul International Conference about Reduction of Earthquakes' Hazards

In an invitation from the Governor of Istanbul and the World Bank, Dr. Jalal Dabeek, Director of the Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering Center (ESSEC) at An Najah National University and the Vice President of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Body, participated in the Istanbul International Conference titled "The Reduction of Earthquakes' Hazards" which was aimed at evaluating the Turkish experience in the field of earthquake hazards reduction and emergency preparation.
Among the participants were the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister, Istanbul Governor and Municipality Mayor, as well as related departments in the World Bank and the United Nations. Several institutions, international centers and a number of experts from 25 countries, including Palestine, also participated.
Dr. Dabeek mentioned that the conference comprised several topics such as: reinforcing emergency preparation capabilities through enhancing emergency communication systems, establishing information systems for emergency management, reinforcing institutions' capabilities, developing emergency response capabilities, in addition to general awareness and training. Further issues included: the reduction of earthquake hazards through reinforcing buildings such as hospitals, schools and others in order to withstand earthquakes, to consider public safety standards in the designing of buildings and the training of engineers in this respect.
Dr। Dabeek also met with representatives of international institutions such as the United Nations and the World Bank in respect to the reduction of earthquakes' hazards. Those institutions and the ESSEC agreed on proposing projects in the field of earthquake hazards reduction to be executed in Palestine.
